HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana scored four runs in the final three innings on the way to a 4-2 victory over Southern Mississippi in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park.
Southeastern (7-6) avenged Tuesday night's 9-7 loss to the Eagles with the victory on Wednesday. Junior outfielder
Jacob Seward and senior outfielder
Julian Service led the Lions past Southern Miss (11-3) with two hits apiece.
Freshman pitcher
Carlo Graffeo (1-0) picked up his first victory after throwing two perfect innings of relief. Junior
Derrick Mount retired all four Golden Eagles he faced on the way to earning his first save.
Sophomore pitcher
Josh Green and junior reliever
Gabe Von Rosenberg pitched out of jams in the first four innings, before USM took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. An RBI single by junior catcher Chuckie Robinson put the Golden Eagles on the board, while sophomore third baseman Taylor Braley later scored before Robinson was caught in an inning-ending rundown to give Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
The Lions mounted their first big threat against Southern Miss freshman starter Stevie Powers in the top of the sixth inning. Walks issued to junior first baseman
Jameson Fisher and senior catcher
Chris Eades, as well as a single by Seward loaded the bases with two outs and chased Powers from the game. Freshman reliever Nick Sandlin (1-0) forced Lion junior second baseman
Carson Crites to pop out to keep Southeastern off the board.
SLU got to Sandlin in the top of the seventh inning. Junior outfielder
Ryan Byers walked, Service reached on a Sandlin error and junior third baseman
Kennon Menard drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Seward then singled home Byers and Service to tie the score.
Southeastern took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning. Fisher drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on an error by Braley before scoring on an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter
Daniel Midyett to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.
Southern Miss loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning against SLU junior reliever
Cliff Hurst. Mount came in to get Southeastern out of the jam, as the Saucier, Mississippi native forced USM senior shortstop Nick Dawson to fly out to Service to protect the Lions' 3-2 lead. All five pitchers used by Southeastern pitched out of trouble, as USM stranded 10 batters in the loss.
On the first pitch of the ninth inning, Service roped his first home run of the season over the left field fence to provide the Lions with an insurance run and a 4-2 lead. Mount pitched a perfect ninth to secure Southeastern's first road victory of the season.
Southeastern will open Southland Conference play with a three-game series versus Incarnate Word at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The series opens with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, unless the men's basketball team is still alive in the Southland Conference Tournament.
