THIBODAUX, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior forward
Nanna Pool reached another career milestone but Nicholls pulled away in the second half for a 70-52 win over the Lady Lions in the Southland Conference regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.
Pool grabbed nine rebounds, giving her 1,002 for her career. She is the fifth Lady Lion with 1,000 rebounds in her career, joining Queen Brumfield (1975-79), Deneka Knowles (1992-96), Renee Daniels (1982-86) and Robin Roberts (1979-83).
Taylin Underwood led Southeastern (4-25, 3-15) with 21 points. She also had six assists, seven rebounds and two steals. She hit three 3-pointers to finish with a school-record 73 for the season.
Kyle Felton added eight points and six rebounds.
KaeLynn Boyd contributed six assists and three steals for the Lady Lions, who ended the season with six straight losses.
Nicholls (10-18, 8-10), which clinched a spot in this week's Southland Conference Tournament, had three players in double figures. Tia Charles had 14 points and Cassidy Barrios and Taylor Morrison 11 each. LiAnn McCarthy and Marina Lilly had eight rebounds each.
Southeastern used a 14-3 run to take its only lead of the game at 29-28 on a Underwood layup with 2:28 left in the second quarter. Hope Pawlowski answered with a 3-pointer at the 1:56 mark before Pool tied it with a layup with 1:33 left. Pawlowski regained the lead for the Colonels with a free throw with 1:14 remaining and Lilly scored on a layup with nine seconds left to make it 36-33 at the half.
Nicholls opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 44-35 lead on two Charles free throws with 7:50 left in the third. Southeastern rallied to pull to within 45-41 as Stewart scored off an assist from Underwood at the 4:15 mark. But the Colonels closed the half on another 8-2 run to go up 53-43 on a short jumper by Jovana Mandic with two seconds left.
Underwood cut the deficit to 53-45 with a layup with 9:09 left. After Nicholls got the lead to 12, Underwood hit a pair of free throws to make it 60-51 with 3:22 remaining. But Morrison responded with eight straight points, giving the Colonels a 68-51 lead with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:52 left.
Nicholls got out to a 12-4 lead on a Mandic layup with 6:07 left in the first quarter. An Underwood 3 cut the margin to 15-11 with 2:45 remaining. But Cassidy put back her own miss at the buzzer to give the Colonels a 20-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
Nicholls scored the first five points to take a 25-15 lead on a McCarthy 3 with 6:26 left in the half. But
Peaches Anderson answered with a 3, Pool went in for a layup and Underwood hit another 3 to cut the deficit to 25-24 with 4:34 left. After a 3 by McCarthy,
Bre Warren hit one for the Lady Lions to make it 28-27 at the 3:47 mark.
The game was the final one for seniors Pool, Boyd, Anderson and
Erica Hernandez in their Lady Lion careers.
