HAMMOND, La. – Webb Bobo smashed a two-out, two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning and left-hander
Kyle Cedotal scattered four hits over eight innings Thursday as Southeastern Louisiana defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1, in Southland Conference play at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, extending the Lions' winning streak to 10 games.
Southeastern (16-6, 7-0 Southland) maintains a hold on first place in the conference and if off to its best Southland start in school history, besting a 6-0 start by the 2013 squad.
The Lions scored first, staking Cedotal (4-2) to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Center fielder
Jacob Seward, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, drew a walk from Islander starting pitcher Chris Cooper to open the bottom half of the inning. He advanced to third base on
Jameson Fisher's one-out double to right-center.
Senior designated hitter
Daniel Midyett followed, lofting a fly ball to right field. Seward scored from third, but Fisher, who entered the game ranked third nationally with a .479 batting average, was thrown out attempting to advance to third.
Cedotal kept the Islander bats at bay until the fifth, allowing just a first-inning single to center fielder Zack Gibson.
In the fifth, however, right fielder Brian Deaver turned on a Cedotal offering and deposited a leadoff, solo shot into the screen above the right-field wall, tying the game.
It took Southeastern two innings to get the lead back, but the Lions did so in style.
After Fisher was thrown out trying to advance to second base on a ball in the dirt, Midyett drew a two-out walk in the sixth to bring Bobo up to the plate. The junior left fielder from Prattville, Alabama, worked the count full before depositing the ball over the wall in right for his fourth homer of the season.
Cedotal continued to shut down the A&M-Corpus Christi offense, scattering four hits and a pair of walks in eight innings of work to earn the win. The senior from Denham Springs, Louisiana, fanned eight.
Sophomore right-hander
Kade Granier worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Islander reliever Aaron Hernandez (1-2), who replaced an injured Cooper in the fourth, was tagged with the loss.
Southeastern second baseman
Carson Crites turned in the Lions only multi-hit performance of the evening, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Fisher drew walks in his remaining three plate appearances following his first-inning double.
