SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior
Gustavo Leon shot a 1-under-par 71 to pace the Southeastern Louisiana men's golf team in the final round Tuesday at the UTSA Lone Star Intercollegiate at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Leon, one of just 12 golfers to break par on Tuesday, finished in a three-way tie for 78
th at 23-over 239. Southeastern shot its best round of the tournament, a 9-over 297, but slipped three spots to 10
th at 41-over 905.
"It was our best round of the tournament and it was tough, tough conditions, quite frankly, so not too bad," Southeastern head coach
Jake Narro said. "We were right where we should have been. We didn't do good enough to sneak up there. Overall, we're not quite on top of our games and going into these last three events of the year, we really need to sharpen up as much as we can to make a good run at the (Southland) Conference championship."
No. 50 New Mexico maintained its first-day lead to win by six strokes with a 13-over 877. Rice, which had the day's best score, a 2-under 286, finished second at 19-over 883. North Texas was third at 26-over 890 and was followed by Texas El Paso (896), UTSA (898), Mississippi State (898), McNeese State (899), Ohio State (903) and Little Rock (903).
Ohio State's Tee-k Kelly won by five strokes over Rice's Mario Carmona with a 5-under 211 following a final-round 1-under 71. Carmona, who finished at even-par 216, and McNeese State's Duncan McNeill had the low rounds of the day at 3-under 69.
Senior
Lawrence Allan tied for 18
th with three others at 8-over 224 to lead Southeastern's squad. Allan finished with a 3-over 75 that included birdies on the par-3 eighth and par-5 13
th.
Leon, who jumped 20 spots from Monday, opened with a pair of bogeys on the eighth and ninth before coming back to birdie the par-4 10
th and the 13
th. He then reeled off 13 straight pars before finishing with a birdie on the par-5 seventh.
"He had a great round out there," Narro said of Leon, who had shot rounds of 82 and 86 on Monday. "It's a shame he played so poorly the first day because that is a spectacular round of golf."
Junior
James Anstiss finished in a three-way tie for 41
st at 13-over 229 following a final round 7-over 79. Anstiss was at even par for his first eight holes after birdies on the par-5 11th and 13
