KATY, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana rattled off a 15-0 run early in the second half Thursday against Houston Baptist, but failed to hold off the charging Huskies in a 73-68 loss in the second round of the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament at the Merrell Center.
"I thought there were two runs that were the difference in the game," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "Their run at the end of the first half and then one around six minutes to go where they got control of the game again.
"I was really proud of our guys," Ladner said. "At one point we were 3-15, but they never quit. They finally began to realize the fruits of their hard work and experience some success. It carried over into last night."
The first half was an defensive slugfest with HBU (17-15) shooting 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from the floor and the Lions 29.6 percent (8-for-27).
Southeastern took an early lead, 4-3, on back-to-back layups by
Jordan Capps. With the Lions up, 6-5, HBU embarked on an 11-2 run, going up by eight at the 8:01 mark on Asa Cantwell's 3-pointer.
JaMichael Hawkins pulled Southeastern within four, 24-20, with a 3-pointer with 2:32 to play until halftime, but those were the Lions only points during HBU's key 12-3 run to close out the half. The Huskies took a 33-20 lead into the locker room at the end of the first half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lions embarked on a 9-1 run to pull within 34-29 at the 17:33 mark on a Capps layup. Southeastern would eventually regain the lead, 37-34, on a
Joshua Filmore 3-pointer at the 14:49 mark, capping a 15-0 run by the Lions.
The teams traded leads nine times over the next seven-plus minutes before the Huskies strung together an 11-2 run capped by Colter Lasher's 3-pointer at the 4:11 mark for a 61-53 lead.
Hawkins nailed a 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining in regulation, pulling the Lions within, 67-62, but it was as close as Southeastern would get to the Huskies.
Capps recorded his seventh double-double of the season, and second-straight, with 10 rebounds and a game-high 23 points. Filmore (18) and Hawkins (12) joined Capps in scoring double-digit points for the Lions.
Southeastern shot 39.0 percent (25-of-59) from the floor, including 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from 3-point range. The Lions converted 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Anthony Odunsi led the Huskies with 20 points. He was joined in double figures by Cantwell (15) and Lasher (11). Isiah Robinson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
HBU shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor, including 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from 3-point range. The Huskies converted 16-of-20 (80.0 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Southeastern, 47-32.
The loss ended Southeastern's season.
