Lions Clinch Southland Tournament Bid With Senior Day Win Over Central Arkansas

SLU stretches home win streak to six games

HAMMOND, La. – Seniors Zay Jackson and JaMichael Hawkins scored in double figures Saturday at the University Center to lead Southeastern past Central Arkansas, 75-56, clinching the Lions a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament for a fourth-consecutive season.

Jackson, who hails from Hammond, led Southeastern (9-19, 7-8 Southland) with 21 points and seven assists. Hawkins, a guard from Raymond, Mississippi, contributed 15 points to the win, all from beyond the arc.

The Senior Day win was the sixth-consecutive for the Lions on their home court and second-straight overall.

Central Arkansas (7-18, 6-9 Southland) jumped out to an early lead, going up by seven on Derreck Brooks' jumper (13:54) for a 15-8 advantage.

Southeastern tied up the game, 19-19, on a dunk by James Currington at the 10:04 mark of the first half. Hawkins followed 23 seconds later with one of his five 3-pointers to give the Lions their first lead of the game, 22-19.

Wasting little time, Southeastern extended its lead to double digits, 33-23, at the 5:39 mark on a Jordan Capps layup.

Capps would provide the final basket of the first half, another layup six seconds before halftime, to give the Lions a 48-30 lead.

In the second half, Southeastern stretched its advantage to 24 when Capps hit a jumper at the 7:13 mark, putting the Lions out in front 66-42.

Moses Greenwood scored 10 points to aid the Lion offensive effort and Currington, a sophomore from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Southeastern shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the floor, including 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from 3-point range. The Lions converted 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Bears, 42-36.

Jordan Howard (11 points) and Mathieu Kamba (10 points) led the Bears in scoring. Kamba and Justin Foreman each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Central Arkansas shot 33.3 percent (19-of-57) from the floor, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range. The Bears converted 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) from the free throw line.
