HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead on Northwestern State but the Lady Demons rallied in the second half for a 73-58 Southland Conference win in the University Center Thursday night.
Taylin Underwood provided one highlight of the evening for the Lady Lions (4-22, 3-12), hitting four 3-pointers to set the school single-season record. The sophomore guard now has 69 on the season, breaking Brooke Necaise's record of 66 set in 2007-08.
Senior forward
Nanna Pool recorded her fourth straight double-double and 12
th of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Underwood finished with 10 points as Southeastern shot 39.7 percent from the floor and 26.9 percent on 3s. Senior guard
KaeLynn Boyd had 10 rebounds and eight assists to go with four points while freshman forward
Kyle Felton blocked three shots.
Shahd Abboud led four Lady Demons in double figures with 18 points. Janelle Perez had a double-double for Northwestern State (17-10, 11-5) with 17 points and 10 assists to go with four rebounds and three steals. Abboud (7-of-16) and Perez (5-of-11) combined for 12 3s as the Lady Demons tied a school record with 14 treys.
Keisha Lee added 15 points and eight rebounds while Beatrice Attura had 11 points for NSU which shot 41.3 percent from the field and 46.7 percent on 3s. Tia Youngblood had a team-high nine rebounds.
Southeastern got out to a 7-0 lead on a jumper by Boyd at the 7:07 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Lions took their biggest lead at 12-2 on a Underwood jumper with 4:30 left in the quarter. Northwestern State pulled to within 16-11 on a jumper by Youngblood with 17 seconds remaining. It was 17-11 at the end of the quarter.
A pair of Attura free throws cut the margin to 17-16 with 9:09 left in the half. A pair of
Bre Warren 3s pushed the Southeastern lead back to 25-19 at the 7:41 mark. Lee hit a 3 to make it 29-28 with 3:28 left and after a Pool jumper, Abboud tied it at 31 with another 3 with 1:49 remaining.
Dani Fielder put Southeastern up 33-31 at the half with a layup with 1:19 left.
Southeastern went ahead 36-31 on an Underwood 3 with 9:47 left in the third. Northwestern State came back to take its first lead at 37-36 on Abboud's 3 at the 5:51 mark. Pool answered with a layup 28 seconds later but a 3 by Perez gave the Lady Demons the lead for good at 40-38 with 4:58 remaining. NSU closed the quarter on a 13-4 run, taking a 50-42 lead on a jumper by Lee with 40 seconds left.
The lead grew to 57-44 on an Attura 3 with 7:57 left in the game. Southeastern chiseled it down to eight three times, the last at 61-53 with 4:52 left on a Pool layup. But the Lady Demons answered with a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead at 71-55 on a three-point play by Cheyenne Brown with 1:24 remaining.
Southeastern closes out its home schedule against Central Arkansas Saturday at 1 p.m. Pool, Boyd,
Erica Hernandez and
Peaches Anderson will be honored for Senior Day.
