HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana closes out its non-conference schedule with a trip to in-state rival Southern University Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Southeastern (6-6) will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak overall and a five-game slide in road games. The Lions will also be out to win their seventh non-conference game for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Southeastern opens Southland Conference play at home Saturday at 2 p.m. against Abilene Christian.
There will be no radio for the game between the Lions and Jaguars (4-8). Links to live video (gojagsports.com, subscription required) and live stats will be accessible on the men's basketball schedule page at LionSports.net.
There is a familiarity between the schools located within 46 miles of each other. Roman Banks, now in his sixth season as head coach at Southern, was an assistant under Lions head coaches Billy Kennedy and Jim Yarbrough from 2003-11, serving as the associate head coach from 2006-11. Banks' assistant, Rodney Kirschner, was the video coordinator for the Lions from 2006-08.
Banks is 1-1 against Southeastern. The Jaguars took a 73-69 win in Hammond on Dec. 4, 2015, breaking a seven-game win streak in the series by the Lions. Southeastern won the previous meeting, 65-61, in overtime at home on Dec. 12, 2011. The series between the two programs is tied at 17.
"It's a good one to play before we get into conference play," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We're playing a very good team, a team some people have picked to win the SWAC. They won it last year and went to the NCAA Tournament. It's also a team that has a lot of familiarity with Southeastern with coach Banks and coach Kirschner and the proximity of the schools. We had a heck of a game with them last year. They hit a late 3 to beat us. It's certainly a high-level game that will force us to play at a high level which should be good in terms of preparing us for league play."
Southeastern is coming off a 71-65 loss at North Texas on Dec. 20. The Lions held the Mean Green to one field goal over the final 8:16, but North Texas was able to hold on to hand Southeastern its fifth loss in seven games.
