Lions Return Home to Face Eastern Shore

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana will look to continue its winning ways at home when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

The Lions (4-3) have won 10 straight at home, tied for the 19th-longest streak in the country. Southeastern has not lost in the University Center since a 75-71 setback against Incarnate Word on Jan. 16.

Southeastern students are invited to take a Study Break with Lion Basketball as the first 300 students in attendance will receive a study pack.

The game between the Lions and Eastern Shore (0-6) will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app. Live stats and streaming will be available at www.LionSports.net.

The Lions are coming off a three-game western road trip in which they defeated UTEP (72-56) and lost at Colorado State (67-59) and California (67-55).

"We've played three really highly-profiled, high major programs and beat one of them and took the other two to the wire," Southeastern head coach Jay Ladner said. "Our guys are hanging in there and I like the fact that they are disappointed that they lost. They feel like we could have had the opportunity to win the game. That tells me they have a lot of pride about themselves."

Southeastern cut a 22-point deficit to nine, but the Lions could not get any closer at California on Sunday. Junior guard Davon Hayes had 11 points while sophomore forward Moses Greenwood added 10.

Sophomore guard Marlain Veal averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game over four games in earning honorable mention Southland Player of the Week honors on Monday. He is averaging 16.9 points (sixth in the Southland) and 3.9 rebounds with team highs of 30 assists (seventh in Southland) and 11 steals.

Greenwood is shooting 62.5 percent from the field, fourth best in the league, while averaging 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds with 10 steals. Hayes is also averaging in double figures with 11.0 points and 5.4 rebounds along with 14 assists.

Senior Dominic Nelson (5.7 ppg,) is the team's leader in blocks with 14 while junior guard Jabbar Singleton (4.1 ppg) is second on the team with 22 assists. Nelson is also seventh in the conference with 7.9 rebounds a game.

Coming off the bench will be junior guards Eddy Polanco (6.9 ppg) and George Brock (1.7 ppg), sophomore guard Dimi Cook (3.0 ppg) and freshmen guards Chris Mejia (3.6 ppg) and Michael Corchiani (2.7 ppg).

The Lions are averaging 74.3 points per game on 48.4 percent shooting - second best in the Southland - and are plus-5.3 in rebounding margin - third best in the league.

Southeastern is second in the Southland in scoring defense, allowing opponents 66.4 points a contest. The Lions have held teams to 40.3 percent shooting, third best in the conference, and have forced 101 turnovers.

Maryland Eastern Shore will be looking for its first win after losing 74-53 at Louisiana Tech on Sunday. The Hawks trailed just 31-26 at the half but Louisiana Tech shot 59.3 percent in the second half to pull away.

Senior forward Bakari Copeland scored 14 points, while sophomore guard Dontae Caldwell had a season-high 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore forward Deven Dorsett pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

Bobby Collins, in his third year as head coach of the Hawks, has welcomed in seven newcomers. Eastern Shore was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after going 7-9 in conference play and 10-22 overall last season.

Copeland was named Preseason Second-Team All-MEAC after averaging 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 2015-16. Expected to join Copeland (13.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg) in the starting lineup are Caldwell (5.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg), junior guard Ryan Andino (11.8 ppg), senior guard Thomas Rivera (5.0 ppg, 23 assists) and sophomore forward Isaac Taylor (1.5 ppg). Junior guard Logan McIntosh is averaging 11.2 points while recording 19 assists coming off the bench.

Eastern Shore is averaging 66.3 points on 40.7 percent shooting while allowing 81.8 points on 48.8 percent shooting. The Hawks have been out-rebounded 40.2-31.3 but have a plus-0.8 turnover margin.

This will be the first meeting between Southeastern and Maryland Eastern Shore.
