Southeastern (1-1) will be out to extend its eight-game home winning streak against Jackson State (1-0). The Lions will also be looking to start a season 2-1 for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Southeastern opened the season with an 85-39 home win over Millsaps College.
Sophomore
Marlain Veal and juniors
Jabbar Singleton and
Davon Hayes are expected to start at guard with senior
Jordan Capps at forward and senior
Dominic Nelson at center.
Coming off the bench will be redshirt junior forward
James Currington; sophomore guard
Dimi Cook; sophomore forward
Moses Greenwood; junior guards
Eddy Polanco and
George Brock; freshman forward
Brandon Gonzalez; and freshmen guards
Chris Mejia and
Michael Corchiani.
Veal scored a career-high 28 points at Tulane, going 8-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, and 9-for-15 from the line to eclipse his previous best of 19 points against McNeese on Feb. 16. Capps added 18 points while Hayes had 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. The Lions shot 47.8 percent from the field, 46.7 percent on 3s and 65.8 percent from the line.
Southeastern was within 65-63 following a layup by Hayes with 9:45 remaining. But Tulane went on a 23-8 run over the next seven-plus minutes to break open a game that had seen 16 lead changes and eight ties.
The Lions will have little time to recover before taking on a Jackson State returns nine veterans from a team that went 20-16 overall and finished third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference at 12-6 in 2015-16. The Tigers lost to Southern in the SWAC Tournament championship game, then beat Sam Houston State in the first round of the CIT before losing to Grand Canyon.
"Jackson State poses a major challenge," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We have a quick turnaround, obviously, from a very hard-fought game last night. They are picked No. 2 in the SWAC preseason poll. (Jackson State head coach) Wayne Brent is an outstanding coach. He and I coached in the Mississippi high school ranks for many years so that is somebody I am very familiar with. They have a really good team and are really tough and physical. We're really going to have to pick ourselves up by our boot straps and be ready to go to work because they are going to come in here ready to play."
Headlining the returnees is junior guard Paris Collins, a second-team all-conference selection in 2015-16 after averaging 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds. Collins missed the Tigers' season opener against Xavier (Louisiana) this past Friday with a torn meniscus in his left (non-shooting) hand but is expected back for Wednesday's game.
Also back are senior guard Chance Franklin, who averaged 12.6 points and 2.6 assists a year ago; senior guard Yettra Specks; and senior forward Janarius Middleton.
A trio of transfers - juniors Charles Taylor (Maryland-Baltimore County), Sherron Wilson (Southern Utah) and Maurice Rivers (Rice) - are battling for the other starting spot. Also in the rotation for the Tigers are senior guard/forward Dontaveon Robinson and senior forward/center Treshawn Bolden.
The Tigers opened the season with a 66-54 win over Xavier. Sophomore Edric Dennis had a team-high 21 points while Franklin had 13 and Specks 10. Middleton added 10 rebounds as Jackson State won the rebounding battle, 42-39, getting 14 offensive rebounds.
Rebounds, particularly on the offensive ones, will be a point of emphasis for Southeastern Wednesday. Tulane out-rebounded the Lions 38-29, including 17-10 on the offensive end.
"If there was one statistic that was the difference in the game, that was it," Ladner said. "We shot better field goal percentage but they had 17 more attempts. They had 20 second-chance points. This team prides itself on being physical and offensive rebounds, so we will see if we made some improvement in that area."
Southeastern and Jackson State will be meeting for the 18th time in the series that dates back to the 1982-83 season. The Tigers lead 10-7 after taking an 89-66 win in Jackson, Miss. on Dec. 30, 2015. Southeastern's last win came on Dec. 5, 2009, a 77-55 win in Jackson.
"It is an opportunity for us to beat a very good opponent," Ladner said of Wednesday's game. "It's an opportunity to for us to possibly avenge last year's loss. We played very poorly last year when we played them and they knocked us around pretty good. Hopefully, our guys will be ready to step up to the challenge and be ready to go."
Southeastern will close out its two-game homestand Monday against Xavier-Louisiana at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
