NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Marlain Veal scored a career-high 28 points but Tulane used a second-half run to pull away to a 93-76 victory Monday night in the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Southeastern (1-1) was within 65-63 following a layup by junior
Davon Hayes with 9:45 remaining. But Tulane (1-1) went on a 23-8 run over the next seven-plus minutes to break open a game that had seen 16 lead changes and eight ties.
Veal was 8-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 on 3-pointers, and went 9-of-15 from the line to eclipse his previous best of 19 points against McNeese on Feb. 16. Senior
Jordan Capps added 18 points while Hayes had 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. The Lions shot 47.8 percent from the field, 46.7 percent on 3s and 65.8 percent from the line.
Tulane had five players in double figures, led by Kain Harris with 19 points. Ryan Smith had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Malik Morgan also had 14 points while Cameron Reynolds had 13 and Colin Slater 12. The Green Wave shot 46 percent from the field, including 25 percent on 3s, and 85.7 percent from the line. Tulane also out-rebounded the Lions 38-29, including 17-10 on the offensive boards, and scored 17 points off 18 Southeastern turnovers.
"Give credit to Tulane," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We're not very big and we knew one of the things that was going to be an emphasis was going to the offensive glass. They do a great job of it and we just didn't do a good enough job of establishing tough position. We have to be more physically tough and competitive. I thought that was the difference in the ballgame. We shoot 47 percent and they shoot 46 percent but they had 17 more shots and that is offensive rebounds and errant turnovers. I thought our guys played hard and played with effort. I think they showed at times we have a chance to be a pretty good team for our league. I'm disappointed that we lost but if we handle it right, it can be a positive."
Tulane led 42-39 at the half but Southeastern tied the game at 45 on a Veal 3 with 18:02 remaining in the game. Tulane answered with an 8-3 run to take a 53-48 lead on a Melvin Frazier layup with 16:16 left. Veal countered with a drive down the lane and
George Brock drained a 3 from the top of the key to tie the game at 55 at the 14:37 mark. The Green Wave responded with a 6-1 run, taking a 61-56 lead on two Slater free throws with 12:05 remaining.
Southeastern got to within 65-63 on a reverse layup by Hayes with 9:45 left. But Harris hit a jumper from the left wing and Smith converted a three-point play following a tip in to jump-start a 15-6 run by Tulane. Ray Ona Embo converted a three-point play off a Morgan steal to make it 80-69 with 4:46 left. Two Morgan free throws gave Tulane its biggest lead at 88-71 with 1:58 left.
Southeastern out-shot Tulane, 52.4-42.4 percent and out-rebounded the Wave, 18-15 in the first half. But Tulane scored 10 points off 10 Southeastern turnovers to take a 42-39 halftime lead.
Tulane took an 8-5 lead at the 16:59 mark as Reynolds scored off a steal by Frazier. Southeastern tied it at 8 on Capps' 3-pointer from the top of the key with 16:36 left. After the Green Wave regained the lead on a Frazier dunk off a Morgan pass, Capps hit two free throws and Veal dropped in a 3 from the right wing to put the Lions up 16-12 at the 14:34 mark.
A pair of 3s by Harris and a Morgan jumper gave Tulane a 20-16 lead with 12:24 left in the half. Veal came back with a 3 and sophomore
Moses Greenwood knocked down a jumper to put Southeastern back up 23-22 at the 8:37 mark. A pair of
Dominic Nelson free throws after a Harris layup made it 25-24 Lions with 8:02 left.
A Harris 3 put Tulane ahead 27-25 with 7:16 left. The Green Wave took a 30-26 lead on two Smith free throws at the 4:46 mark. But Veal fed Hayes for an open 3 from the left wing to pull the Lions to within one with 4:10 left in the half.
Veal scored off a steal to give Southeastern a 33-32 lead to touch off a hectic final two minutes of the half. Slater converted a four-point play after being fouled by Greenwood on a 3 from the right corner at the 1:40 mark. Greenwood responded with a layup to tie it at 36 with 1:01 left.
