NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State answered every Southeastern Louisiana streak Saturday with one of its own to pull away in a 91-76 Southland Conference win over the Lions at Prather Coliseum.
Northwestern State (5-14, 2-7 Southland), which had snapped a 7-game losing streak last time out, opened up by scoring the first eight points of the game.
The Lions (3-17, 1-6 Southland) responded with a 16-3 run to claim their first lead.
Jordan Capps was dominant inside early, scoring nine of those 16 points.
The Demons answered with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead, 18-16, at the 8:37 mark on Zeek Woodley's 3-pointer.
Northwestern State would expand its lead to 26-20 before the Lions answered with a 9-0 run to take back the lead, 29-26, thanks in part to six more points by Capps.
Southeastern headed to the locker room up, 32-30, with the junior from Norcross, Georgia, contributing 15 points to the offensive effort.
Coupled with the final basket of the first half, the Demons strung together a 15-2 run early in the second half to take a 43-34 lead over Southeastern.
Heading into the second media timeout of the second half Northwestern State had converted 9-of-14 shots for a 59-43 lead, outscoring the Lions 29-10 in the first 8:03 following halftime.
Capps scored a career-high 19 points to lead Southeastern.
Marlain Veal, a freshman from Gretna, Louisiana, dished out a career-high 9 assists to go with a career-best 18 points.
Dimi Cook (12) and
Zay Jackson (11) also scored double-digit points for the Lions.
Dominic Nelson grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Southeastern shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the floor, including 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range. The Lions converted 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the free throw line.
Woodley, the conference's leading scorer, led Northwestern State with 19 points. Ishmael Lane and Devontae Hall each contributed a double-double effort. Lane with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Hall with 11 points and 10 assists. Sabri Thompson (17) and Ta'Jon Welcome (14) also scored in double figures for the Demons.
Northwestern State shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the floor, including 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from 3-point range. The Demons converted all 12 of their attempts from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Lions, 41-28.
Southeastern returns to the University Center floor Monday against McNeese State (5-12, 3-4 Southland) for the annual Jam the Jungle game. The first 300 students in attendance will receive a spirit item and there will be special promotions throughout the game.
