Big Cats Set To Square Off In Baton Rouge

SLU travels to Southern for Tuesday non-conference match

BATON ROUGE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana travels to the state's capital city Tuesday for a 6 p.m. volleyball match at Clifford Seymour Gym against Southern University.

Live stats are available for the match with links on both the front page and volleyball schedule page at www.LionSports.net. Southeastern (3-6) begins a stretch of three-straight matches against Southwestern Athletic Conference competition.

The Lady Lions held off a late charge Saturday by Portland State for a four-set victory at UNLV's Rebel Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20, 26-24. Landry Bullock carried the offensive load for the Lady Lions, recording nine of her team-high 17 kills in the final set to seal the win and Brooke Balser, a Ponchatoula native, posted a career-high 24 digs.

Bullock (3.13 kills per set), Tiffany Thomas (2.28 k/set), Sarah Freidman (1.91 k/set) and Parrie Hartley (1.88 k/set) pace the Lady Lion offense this season under the direction of setters Mikayla Shippy (6.10 a/set) and Haley Baker (5.05 assists per set). Baker's nine service aces are tops on the squad and ranks her in the Top 100 nationally, (94th, 0.41 sa/set).

Balser (3.56 d/set), Monica Ramon (2.78 digs per set) and Madi Odom (2.00 d/set) anchor the back row defensively. Rachael Bunn (0.45 b/set), Veronica Turk (0.39 b/set), Thomas (0.38 b/set) and Shelby Devlin (0.30 blocks per set) lead Southeastern's front-line defensive effort.

Southern (0-10) has dropped three matches to Southland Conference competition so far this season, resulting in wins for Nicholls, Incarnate Word and Lamar.

Chinasa Ekweariri (1.83 k/set), Leila Lealaimatafao (1.77 k/set) and Vaterra Calais (4.63 a/set) lead the Lady Jaguars on offense. Libero Diamond Williams (4.23 d/set) and Lealaimatafao (0.60 b/set) are the squad's defensive leaders.

Southeastern will have its final tuneup before Southland Conference play begins with three matches at the University of Houston's Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup this coming weekend. The Lady Lions face Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M on Friday and the host Cougars on Saturday.
