Seward Breaks Hitting-Streak Record In Extra-Inning Loss

Sophomore hits safely for 23rd-straight game

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jacob Seward broke the Southeastern Louisiana hitting-streak record Tuesday, but it was not enough for the Lions as they fell, 5-4, to Tulane in 10 innings at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Southeastern (33-13) rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs in the ninth, and took the lead in the 10th, but pinch hitter Tyler Wilson knocked a 2-run home run to give the Green Wave (28-16) the win in walk-off fashion.

Seward chopped an infield single to short with two outs in the third, extending his hitting streak to 23 games and bypassing former record holder Gavin Fingleson.

A tight game, Pat Cashman carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Tulane scratched across a run to take the lead. John Gandolfo singled up the up the middle with one out and came around to score on Lex Kaplan's two-out double to left-center field.

The Lions would come right back to tie the game. Kennon Menard led off the fifth with a single through the right side. Chris Eades knocked a one-out single up the middle and Ryan Byers followed with a walk to load the bases.

Green Wave starting pitcher Emerson Gibbs uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Menard to score from third with the tying run.

Tulane responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth, taking back the lead.

In the ninth, Kevin Carr led off the inning with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Drew Avans advanced to third base when Brett Hoffman snuck a double inside the bag at third. Kyle Cedotal pinch ran for Hoffman. Menard brought the Lions within one, driving in Avans with a grounder to shortstop.

The Green Wave went to the bullpen and pinch hitter Webb Bobo greeted reliever Corey Merrill with a single to left, driving home Cedotal with the tying run.

Reliever Tim Yandel hit Seward with a pitch leading off the 10th and he advanced to third on Carson Crites' single to right-center. The Lions took the lead when Seward scored from third on a passed ball.

Mac Sceroler (2-2) worked a scoreless eighth and ninth, but Tulane shortstop Stephen Alemais led off the final frame with a single to right and was aboard for Wilson's blast to left.

Eric Steel (2-0), the sixth and final pitcher used by Tulane, earned the win while Sceroler suffered the loss.

Menard (3-for-5) and Crites (2-for-5) led the Lions at the plate.

Southeastern returns to conference play Friday at 6 p.m. against Lamar in the opener of a three-game series.
