HAMMOND – Playing in her final game as a Lady Lion, Southeastern Louisiana senior guard
Elizabeth Styles became the first student-athlete in SLU women's basketball history to top both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists in Saturday's 77-74 Senior Day loss to Nicholls in the University Center.
Styles finished with 21 points, six assists and steals to lead SLU (7-22, 3-15 Southland) in the season finale. The Savannah, Georgia native became the 19
th student-athlete to reach 1,000 career points, finishing her four years in Hammond with 1,006 points. Her 503 career assists rank her fourth in school history.
Styles was one of five Lady Lions to close out their Southeastern careers on Saturday, along with
Symone Miller,
Annessa De La Cruz,
Jameika Hoskins and Adrina Lavern. Hoskins (16 points) and LaVern (10 points) both posted career highs in scoring to join Styles in double figures. Hoskins also tied with senior forward
Nanna Pool for team-high honors with seven rebounds.
Nicholls (17-12, 13-5 Southland) was led by senior guard Jenny Nash, who finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior center Shay Arnick (13 points) and freshman forward Ekiya Gray (11 points) joined Nash in double figures, while freshman guard Tia Charles dished out a game-high eight assists.
Southeastern jumped out to a 34-30 lead and led by five with 3:46 remaining. However, a three-point field goal by Nash gave the Colonels the lead for good with 1:14 remaining.
With Nicholls clinging to a three-point lead, SLU had one final possession. At the buzzer, Styles leaned into a three that drew back iron and Nicholls escaped with a victory.
Southeastern will return seven letter winners from this season's team in 2015-16. Pool,
Erica Hernandez and
Peaches Anderson will be the top returners for the Lady Lions.
