HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's golf team and sophomore
James Anstiss each set tournament records in the opening round to help the Lions sit in second place after the opening day of the Lone Star Invitational Monday afternoon at the Briggs Ranch Country Club.
SLU shot a 16-under par 272 to set a new tournament record over the first 18 holes and held a three-stroke lead after the opening round. Pacing the Lions in the opening round was Anstiss, who carded a 64 in the first round, matching the lowest score by an individual in the six-year history of the tournament.
Both Anstiss and the Lions cooled down somewhat in the day's second round, as SLU shot two-under par on the second 18 of the day. Texas Tech finished the day with a remarkable two-round score of 27-under par to take a nine-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round.
While Anstiss had the low round of the day for the Lions, the team's top finisher was senior
Grady Brame. The Hammond native shot a pair of 69's to finish six-under par for the day. Brame is currently in a tie for fourth, three strokes behind day one leader Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech.
Anstiss shot a 76 in the second round to finish four-under par for the day. He sits in a tie for 12
th with junior teammates
Eamon Bradley and
Lawrence Allan. Sophomore
Paul Obermann (+6, T63rd) rounds out the Lion lineup.
Southeastern will be paired with the Red Raiders, host UTSA and UTEP for the final round on Tuesday. Tee time is 8:30 a.m. and live stats, provided by UTSA, will be accessible at LionSports.net.
