Lions, Wildcats Set To Tangle In West Texas

SLU heads to Abilene Christian

ABILENE, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball program heads west for a Southland Conference game Saturday at Abilene Christian.

Southeastern (5-16, 2-6 Southland) and the Wildcats (9-13, 3-6 Southland) tip at 4 p.m. Saturday as the second half of a doubleheader featuring the Lady Lion and ACU squads at Moody Coliseum.

Both games can be heard in the Hammond, Louisiana, area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. The Lions are coming off their fourth-straight conference loss, 73-60 to McNeese State, this past Monday at the University Center. Onochie Ochie scored a career-high 19 points to lead Southeastern in the game and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Cedric Jenkins, a native of LaPlace, Louisiana, chipped in 17 points while Zay Jackson scored 10 and handed out seven assists.

Jackson (16.2 points per game), DeVonte Upson (9.6 ppg) and Ochie (8.7 ppg) lead Southeastern on offense. Upson is averaging a team-best 7.6 rebounds per contest, fourth most in the conference. Jackson is sixth in the Southland in scoring.

The Lions are shooting 43.7 percent from the floor (514-of-1,176), 30 percent from three-point range (126-of-420) and 66.8 percent on free throws (263-of-394). Southeastern is averaging 67.4 points and 33.9 rebounds per game.

ACU has dropped six in-a-row since knocking off Central Arkansas, Nicholls State and Northwestern State in three-consecutive games to open Southland play.

Harrison Hawkins (13.6 ppg), Parker Wentz (12.6 ppg), LaDarrien Williams (10.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Austin Cooke (9.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) form the core of the ACU squad.

The Wildcats are shooting 42 percent from the floor (470-of-1,118), 39.2 percent from three-point range (164-of-418) and 72.6 percent on free throws (260-of-358). ACU is averaging 68.2 points and 30 rebounds per game.

Last season, Williams scored 30 and Hawkins added 29 points for ACU as Southeastern pulled out an 85-77 double overtime win over the Wildcats. Cooke had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Southeastern returns to the University Center for a 7 p.m. conference matchup Tuesday against Central Arkansas. The game is slated as Faculty Appreciation Day. Promotional and ticket info is available at www. LionSports.net.
