Michigan State Outlasts Lions

Southeastern returns to action Wednesday at LSU

ARLINGTON, Texas – Michigan State scored runs in six of its eight trips to the plate Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark as the Spartans downed Southeastern Louisiana, 9-2, in the final game of the UTA Hilton Invitational.

Southeastern (5-3) scored the first and last runs of the game, but Michigan State (3-3) kept continual pressure on in between.

The Lions pushed across a run in the second inning to jump out in front, 1-0. Kevin Carr singled up the middle, moving up to second base when Carson Crites followed with a walk. Ryan Byers sacrificed both into scoring position and Carr scored on Brett Hoffman's sacrifice fly to left field.

Michigan State answered with single runs in the bottom of the inning, as well as the third, fourth and fifth. The Spartans then added a pair of runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth.

In the ninth, Brooks Morse drew a walk to lead off the inning. A wild pitch moved Morse to second, before tagging and taking third on Jacob Seward's fly out to center. Pinch hitter Jacob Williams drove in Morse with a one-out single down the line in right.

Spartan starting pitcher Anthony Misiewicz (1-0) earned the win, fanning seven in five innings of work. Southpaw Kyle Cedotal (1-1), the first of five Lion pitchers in the game, suffered the loss.

Carr went 2-for-3 to lead Southeastern at the plate. Eight different Lions hit safely in the game.

Houston Baptist won the tournament, defeating host UT Arlington Saturday evening. The Huskies and Mavericks each finished with a pair of wins. The Lions and Spartans both claimed one win over the course of the weekend.

Southeastern returns to action Wednesday at No. 2-ranked LSU in a 6:30 p.m. contest slated to be broadcast on the SEC Network+.
