HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana freshman guard
Taylin Underwood netted a career-high 22 points, but it was not enough in a 83-65 Lady Lion loss to Abilene Christian in Southland Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Underwood, a Livingston, Louisiana native, hit a career-high six three-pointers for SLU (7-18, 3-11 Southland), which lost for the sixth straight game. Abilene Christian (15-10, 7-7 Southland) won its fourth straight game, as four Wildcats scored in double figures.
Underwood was one of two Lady Lions in double figures. Junior forward
Nanna Pool finished with her 10
th double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Elizabeth Styles led SLU with a game-high six assists.
ACU saw sophomore forwards Suzzy Dimba (23 points, 15 rebounds) and Sydney Shelstead (14 points, 11 rebounds) both post double-doubles. Sophomore guard Alexis Mason and sophomore forward Lizzy Dimba chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Both teams made 10 three-point field goals, but ACU attempted 11 less than SLU.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half. ACU torched the nets for 54.5 percent field goal shooting in the opening half. Underwood kept SLU in it for the first 20 minutes by hitting four threes and scoring 16 points – besting her previous career-high of 14 points – to keep Southeastern within seven at the break.
Southeastern got as close as two points early in the second half. However, the Wildcats would eventually grow the lead to double digits on a jumper by Shelstead with 7:33 remaining. SLU would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way, as it was outscored, 38-27, in the second half.
Southeastern will open a three-game road swing on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Northwestern State in Natchitoches. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at
