HAMMOND, La. – Shawn Prudhomme hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to play, putting Southern back on top to stay in a 73-69 non-conference win Friday over Southeastern Louisiana at the University Center.
Prudhomme's shot, with some insurance in the form of a pair of Trelun Banks free throws, sealed the win for former Lion assistant Roman Banks. Facing Southeastern (2-7) for the first time since the 2011-12 season, Banks evened his record against the Lions to 1-1 as the head coach at Southern (5-1).
"Our players are hurting," Southeastern coach
Jay Ladner said. "We were one stop away from winning the game. We've got some first-year guys playing huge roles for us. It hurts that we lost."
Southeastern jumped out to an early 9-5 lead on the Jaguars thanks to 3-pointers from
Joshua Filmore,
Dimi Cook and
Zay Jackson inside of the first five minutes of play. Southern snapped a 9-0 Lions run with a jumper from Adrian Rogers at the 11:11 mark, but
Jordan Capps answered with a 3-pointer to put Southeastern up, 18-7, just 10 seconds later.
Mo Greenwood's put back gave the Lions a 13-point lead, 20-7, before Southern could get its offense going. A 17-5 run by the Jaguars brought them within one, 25-24, at the 5:44 mark. After a
Keith Charleston free throw, Prudhomme sank a 3-pointer to give Southern a 27-26 lead at the 5:01 mark.
The Jaguars would build a 6-point lead, but a 3-pointer by Jackson at the 1:20 mark and his free throw on the next possession would pull Southeastern within 35-33 by halftime.
Southern opened the second half on a 10-3 run, putting its lead at 45-34 with 16:22 to play in regulation.
Down 57-44, the Lions went on an 8-2 run to pull within seven points on
Dominic Nelson's jumper at the 10:07 mark. Southeastern closed within five, 65-60, at the 4:03 mark on a layup by Charleston and the ensuing free throw.
The Lions tied and then took the lead, 69-68, on a pair of free throws by Jackson with 27 seconds to play.
Jackson scored a game-high 23 points and handed out seven assists to pace the Lions. Cook added 11 and Charleston scored 10 points. Cook grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to lead the team.
Southeastern shot 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the floor, including 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from 3-point range. The Lions were 23-of-35 (65.7 percent) from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 42-27.
Prudhomme led three Jaguars in double-figure scoring with 23 points. Rogers chipped in 18 and Banks scored 13 points. Chris Thomas hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
Southern shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor, including 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from 3-point range. The Jaguars were 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the free throw line.
The Lions take the next week off for final exams. Southeastern returns to action Dec. 13 at Florida State.
