Lady Lions break through at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three Lady Lions finished in double figures as Southeastern snapped a pair of streaks with a 62-57 win at Florida A&M in the Lawson Center Wednesday night.

Taylin Underwood scored 20 points, Nanna Pool 12 and Peaches Anderson 10 as the Lady Lions (1-7) broke an overall 17-game losing streak and a 22-game road losing streak. Underwood also had six rebounds, three steals and two assists while Anderson added four assists and four rebounds. Pool just missed her second straight double-double with nine rebounds. Southeastern shot 32.9 percent from the field but turned the ball over just 11 times while recording 11 assists.

"I thought our guards, Taylin and Peaches, played a big-time game and did a really good job taking care of the basketball," Southeastern head coach Yolanda Moore said. "Maintaining poise when they threw their traps and pressure at us. We just had a lot of contributions from everyone who played, whether it be getting deflections or key rebounds or hitting the open shot. They did a very good job for us tonight."

Southeastern won for the first time since defeating Northwestern State 58-52 on Jan. 31, 2015 and got its first road win since a 76-59 win at New Orleans on Feb. 20, 2014.

"I thought we showed a lot of toughness and a lot of resilience," Moore said. "Coming in here 0-7, it would have been easy for them to come out here and give a lackluster effort and not have any confidence but they stayed together, they worked hard, they executed our game plan and more importantly, they played with confidence and they believed in what we were trying to do."

Olivia Antilla had a game-high 24 points for Florida A&M (3-5) which shot 34.4 percent and turned the ball over 20 times. Khadejra Young pulled down 10 rebounds and had eight rebounds.

Southeastern took the lead for good at 47-46 on a Peaches Anderson jumper with 8:45 remaining. Jumpers by Dani Fielder and Anderson built the lead to 51-46 at the 6:06 mark. Florida A&M pulled to within 51-50 with 5:47 behind a 3-pointer by Kenya Dixon. But Pool answered with a short jumper and Underwood drained a 3 to make it 56-50 with 4:27 remaining.

The Rattlers again got the margin down to 58-57 on a three-point play by Victoria Nguyen with 1:35 left and had a chance to regain the lead following a steal by Shalaunda Burney-Robinson. Nguyen rebounded a missed 3 by Antilla but Underwood stripped of her the ball, then hit a jumper to put Southeastern up 60-57 with 1:11 remaining. Following a turnover by Cedricka Sweeting, Anderson was intentionally fouled by Nguyen and made both free throws with 11 seconds left.

Southeastern took a 45-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Florida A&M went ahead for the final time on an Antilla 3 with 9:40 remaining in the game.

The Lady Lions held a 29-25 halftime lead and went up 37-31 on a Pool jumper with 5:23 left in the third. Florida A&M responded with a 10-0 run to take a 41-37 lead on Antilla's 3 with 2:46 remaining. Southeastern regained the lead on a 3 by Gabriella Delaune at the 1:19 mark. After a Jasmine Robertson jumper tied the game, Underwood hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Lions a 45-43 lead with 35 seconds left.

Southeastern got out to a 5-0 lead on a Chey Stewart jumper with 8:06 left in the first. Florida A&M took its first lead at 10-8 on a jumper by Young at the 4:46 mark. Underwood countered with a 3 with 3:12 left. There would be three more lead changes and two ties before Underwood hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to give the Lady Lions a 17-15 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Southeastern built the lead to 20-17 on a Anderson jumper with 6:56 left in the half. Florida A&M went on an 8-1 run to take a 25-21 lead on a 3 by Antilla with 4:09 remaining. But the Lady Lions closed the half on an 8-0 run, taking the 29-25 halftime lead on a jumper by Dani Fielder with 21 seconds left.

Southeastern will now be off for two weeks before hosting Jackson State on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.
