FORT WORTH, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana put together a couple a big runs Friday against TCU, but it was not enough to overcome the Horned Frogs in a 90-77 loss at the University Recreation Center.
"We got off to a slow start defensively, and they shot the ball well, but then we settled down," head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We struggled to share the ball at times and didn't shoot the ball well in those stretches. It's a maturation process for us."
Mike Hawkins picked up the Lions (0-1) first basket of the game, draining a 3-pointer just 1:39 into the game to tie it up early. TCU (1-0) responded, quickly, rattling off 12 points in the next 1:59.
Down 16-3, Southeastern went to work chipping away at the deficit. Freshman guard
Marlain Veal, the Louisiana 2A Player of the Year at Helen Cox HS last season, converted a pair of free throws for his first collegiate points.
Veal's free throws started the Lions on a 17-7 run that brought them with three, 23-20, with 6:08 remaining in the half.
Another big run, 15-2, by the Horned Frogs pushed their lead back up, but Southeastern shaved five points off the deficit in the final 1:55 of the half.
A pair of free throws by Chauncey Collins with nine seconds to play before halftime gave TCU a 42-31 lead.
In the second half, Southeastern shaved 10 points off TCU's game-high 22 point lead, 63-41, with baskets from
Joshua Filmore,
James Currington and a pair from
Zay Jackson.
Jackson tied for the game high with 19 points. Hawkins and
Keith Charleston each contributed nine points. Charleston was also the Lions' leading rebounder with seven boards.
Southeastern shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, including 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from 3-point range. The Lions were 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the free throw line.
A tightly called game by the officials had the Lions whistled for 37 fouls, three shy of the school record. The foul total was also the third-most ever called against a TCU opponent.
It was the most called against Southeastern since being popped for 33 in a Southland Conference game against Nicholls on Jan. 31, 2009. Newcomers Capps, Charleston,
Dimi Cook and Veal all fouled out of their first game in a Lion uniform, also one shy of the school record.
Vlad Brodziansky (19 points, 10 rebounds), Collins (17), Karviar Shepherd (16) and Brandon Parrish scored in double figures for the Horned Frogs.
TCU shot 49 percent (24-of-49) from the floor, including 50 percent (6-of-12) from 3-point range. The Horned Frogs were 36-of-47 (76.6 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Southeastern, 40-34.
The Lions travel to Texas A&M for a Monday evening contest against former Southeastern head coach Billy Kennedy. Tip off against the Aggies is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the SEC Network+ and WatchESPN.
