HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team held off Central Arkansas, for the first time in school history, for a five-set Southland Conference win, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 10-25, 16-14, Thursday at the University Center.
Southeastern (13-17, 7-9 Southland) rebounded after dropping the first and fourth sets to defeat the Sugars Bears (15-12, 11-4 Southland), the conference's second-place team.
The Lady Lions dropped a close first set and fell behind in the second before rallying. Down 11-6, Southeastern went on a 10-1 run to take the lead midway through the set. Junior
Madi Odom was responsible for three kills in the stretch.
UCA pulled within one, 20-19, following a Lady Lion timeout, but Southeastern held off the Sugar Bears to even up the match at one set apiece.
The Lady Lions jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the third, maintaining a lead the entire set.
After UCA closed out the fourth set on a 17-5 run, Southeastern rebounded in the fifth. Going up 4-3 on a kill by Odom, the Lady Lions held the lead until UCA tied the set, 14-14, on a service ace.
Parrie Hartley responded with a kill, putting Southeastern back up, and then teamed with
Veronica Turk on a block to finish off the match.
Landry Bullock and Hartley tallied 12 kills each to pace the Lady Lion offense. Odom, who recorded 14 digs, chipped in another 10 kills for her second-consecutive double-double.
Haley Baker (26 assists) and
Mikayla Shippy (18 assists) split setting duties.
Monica Ramon led four Lady Lions in double-figure digs with 18. She was joined by Odom,
Brooke Balser (10) and
Macey Stock (10).
Heather Schnars led UCA with 17 kills, recording a double-double with 17 digs. Samantha Anderson added 12 kills for the Sugar Bears. Amy South handed out 44 assists. Megan Nash had a hand in 10 of UCA's 15 total blocks. Allie Kemp led all players with 20 digs.
Southeastern returns to action Nov. 20 in the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament. A single-elimination affair, the tournament is hosted this season by UCA. More information about the tournament can be found on the volleyball page at www. LionSports.net.
