HAMMOND, La. – LSU Alexandria jumped out to an early lead Wednesday thanks to some sharp shooting and never looked back, taking down Southeastern Louisiana, 82-68, in an exhibition game at the University Center.
Both teams, in their first game action of the season, had an early feeling out period. Southeastern pulled within one, 10-9, at the 13:50 mark of the first half, but the Generals slowly started to add to their lead.
"You have to give LSU Alexandria a lot of credit," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "They shot the ball well and were highly motivated. I told coach [Larry] Cordaro he did a great job. He has a great team and they deserve a lot of credit for the way the game started."
LSUA headed to the locker room with a 45-30 lead at the half. Southeastern cut the lead back to 12 with an early second-half basket from
Joshua Filmore, but the Generals pushed the lead up to a game-high 27 points midway through the game's final half.
"We sat behind their big guys all night," Ladner said. We have to play quicker and be more aggressive, not allow the ball to come into the post. We didn't do that in the first half. Our intensity level picked up a bit in the second half, but by then we had dug ourselves a hole."
Guards
Dimi Cook, a freshman from Gulfport, Mississippi, and
Zay Jackson, a senior from Hammond, each scored 14 points to lead the Lions. Filmore, a junior guard from Orlando, Florida, added 10 points.
James Currington, a sophomore forward from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, led all players with 10 rebounds.
Southeastern shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range. The Lions were 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) from the free throw line.
Darryl Milburn led four Generals in double-digit scoring with 15 points. DeAngelo Coleman scored 14 while Gilbert Talbot and Brian Sylvester chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sylvester and Talbot led LSUA in rebounding, each hauling in seven boards.
The Generals shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the floor, including 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from 3-point range. LSUA was 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Lions, 34-33.
