HOUSTON, Texas – Houston Baptist's Sabriah Spencer scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the first overtime to give the Huskies a 1-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference women's soccer action Friday night at Sorrels Field.
The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak and four-match winning streak for the Lady Lions (8-2-1, 3-1 Southland). Houston Baptist improved to 5-3-1 overall and 3-1 in league action.
"This was a good game, but it just wasn't our night," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. "We were able to create plenty of opportunities, but we weren't able to put one in the net and come out with a win.
"We were very pleased with the efforts of (senior)
Cheyenne Maxwell, (sophomore)
Maddie Kresevic and (senior)
Maddie Allen on the back line tonight," Hornbuckle added. "Set pieces are often the difference in close matches and we were on the wrong end of things tonight."
The match was evenly played throughout, as both teams finished with 15 shots and seven corner kicks. Senior
Gisenia Utreras led Southeastern with four shots in the loss.
A corner kick for HBU would provide the game-winner midway through the first overtime period. Spencer headed a corner kick from Elizabeth Adams past SLU junior goalkeeper
Hope Sabadash to give the Huskies the victory.
Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. league match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Live stats and video, provided by the host Islanders, will be accessible at LionSports.net.
