Lions Tangle With Pair Of Cardinals In Texas

SLU travels to Incarnate Word, Lamar

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball squad travels to Southland Conference foes Incarnate Word and Lamar for a pair of contests Saturday and Monday.

Southeastern (4-12, 1-2 Southland) and the Cardinals (9-4, 1-2 Southland) tip at approximately 4 p.m. Saturday as the second half of a doubleheader at the McDermott Convocation Center featuring the Lady Lion and UIW squads.

The Lions and Lamar (9-7, 3-1 Southland) face off at 7 p.m. Monday at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.

All of the games can be heard in the Hammond, Louisiana, area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone app. Live statistics will be provided for both contests, as will streaming video of the Lamar game (subscription required). Southeastern is coming off a 72-59 conference loss at home to first-place Sam Houston State this past Monday. Zay Jackson led the Lions with 18 points. Fellow guard Joshua Filmore added 17 points and Daniel Grieves grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against the Bearkats.

Jackson (16.0 points per game), Filmore (13.4 ppg) and DeVonte Upson (9.1 ppg) lead Southeastern on offense. Senior forward Onochie Ochie has stepped up his game in conference play, scoring an average of 10 points through the first three games. Jackson (4.1 assists per game) and Filmore (2.4 apg) have split time running the point. Upson is averaging a team-best 7.3 rebounds per contest, fifth most in the Southland Conference. Filmore's 2.8 three-pointers per game leads the conference.

The Lions are shooting 43.1 percent from the floor (386-of-896), 31.5 percent from three-point range (102-of-324) and 67.7 percent on free throws (191-of-282). Southeastern is averaging 66.6 points and 32.6 rebounds per game.

UIW is coming off its first Southland win of the season, knocking of the University of New Orleans, 97-66, Monday in San Antonio. Three Cardinals, Denzel Livingston, Kyle Hittle and Jontrell Walker, all scored more than 20 points apiece.

Livingston leads the Southland, averaging 23 points per game this season, while Walker is fourth (17.7 ppg). Hittle pours in 14.7 points on average and grabs a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game.

The best shooting team in the conference, the Cardinals are successful on 47.7 percent of their overall attempts (370-of-775), 38.6 percent from three-point range (107-of-277) and 72.1 percent on free throws (259-of-359). UIW is averaging 85.1 points, a Southland best, and 36.0 rebounds per game.

Lamar is coming off a 66-64 conference victory Monday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and has won seven of its last eight overall. The Cardinals play Saturday afternoon at Northwestern State.

Tyran de Lattibeaudiere (14.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg), Anthony Holliday (11.7 ppg) and former Lion hoopster Donovan Ross (10.2 ppg) lead Lamar offensively. Through four games, Holliday is averaging 19 points per game in conference play.

Lamar is shooting 45.6 percent from the floor (421-of-924), 31.4 percent from three-point range (91-of-290) and 64.3 percent on free throws (231-of-359). The Cardinals average 72.8 points and 36.1 rebounds per game.

Following the pair of road games, Southeastern returns home to the University Center for three straight games against A&M-Corpus Christi (Jan. 26), Northwestern State (Jan. 31) and McNeese State (Feb. 2).
