HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball sqaud picked up its first Southland Conference win of the season Saturday at the University Center, downing Houston Baptist, 87-67.
Southeastern (4-11, 1-1 Southland) jumped out in front early and held off HBU (6-7, 1-2 Southland) the rest of the game, taking advantage of 17 Huskie turnovers. The Lions picked up 23 points off HBU's miscues.
Zay Jackson put Southeastern up by 16 in the first half, 40-24, with a layup off an assist from
Joshua Filmore. The Huskies would never get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Filmore and
Onochie Ochie each scored 17 points, leading the charge for the Lions. Jackson added 15 and
DeVonte Upson chipped in 14 points. Filmore and Jackson both tied career highs with seven assists each. Upson tied for the game high with eight rebounds.
Southeastern shot 54.8 percent from the floor (34-of-62), including 50 percent from three-point range (10-of-20). The Lions converted 9-of-15 from the free throw line (60 percent).
Anthony Odunsi scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Huskies. Reveal Chukwujeku added 12 points and Colter Lasher grabbed eight boards.
HBU shot 42.9 percent from the floor (27-of-63), including 20 percent from three-point range (3-of-15). The Huskies converted 10-of-11 from the free throw line (90.9 percent) and out-rebounded Southeastern, 39-29.
Southeastern hosts Sam Houston State (11-4, 3-0 Southland) in another conference contest Monday at 7 p.m. The Bearkats topped the University of New Orleans, 68-62, Saturday in New Orleans, Louisiana.
