Lady Lions Drop Opener At JMU Invitational

Southeastern falls to George Washington in four sets

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team dropped its opening match at the JMU Invitational, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, Friday to George Washington at James Madison's Sinclair Gymnaisum.

After dropping the first two sets by identical scores, Southeastern (2-3) grabbed a tight third set from the Colonials (4-0). Fighting off a tie score 11 times in the set, the Lady Lions took the lead for good, 17-16. Southeastern was unable to maintain the momentum, however, through the fourth set.

Tiffany Thomas, a junior from Friendswood, Texas, recorded 12 kills to lead the Southeastern offense. Sophomore Landry Bullock added another nine. Mikayla Shippy handed out 33 assists. Parrie Hartley served up all three Lady Lion aces in the match.

Southeastern posted 10 total blocks. Rachael Bunn and Veronica Turk each played a part in five blocks. Morgan Todd tallied 19 digs and Brooke Balser added 13 for the Lady Lions.

Three Colonials recorded double-digit kills, including Kelsey Newman (15), Loren Williams (13) and Chidima Osuchukwu (12). Newman was one of two players to turn in a double-double, picking up 10 digs.

George Washington also had three players hand out double-digit assists, including Jordan Timmer (21), Emily Clemens (15) and Maddy Doyle (10). Doyle turned in the Colonials other double-double with a team-high 16 digs.

Christina Porada added 12 digs to the defensive effort while Maggie Skkjelbred's eight total blocks aided George Washington on its way to posting 13.5 blocks as a team.

Southeastern will match up with host James Madison (2-2) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Hampton (3-1) later in the day at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available for all matches during the tournament, courtesy James Madison, and links can be found on the volleyball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
