Lady Lions Sweep Past Jacksonville State

Southeastern picks up first win of the season as Ramee posts first double-double of career

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team swept past Jacksonville State in three sets, 25-13, 31-29, 25-16, Saturday at the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge.

Southeastern (1-2) set the tone early, dominating Jacksonville State (0-4) with an efficient offense and a stingy defense. The Lady Lions hit .264 as a team, holding the Gamecocks to a .113 attack percentage and recording eight team blocks.

SLU posted a .533 attack percentage (18 kills, 2 errors, 30 attempts) in the first set, taking control with a 13-4 run. Five different Lady Lions recorded multiple kills in the set, including Parrie Hartley, Veronica Turk, Rachael Bunn, Sarah Friedman and Elizabeth Ramee.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair with four lead changes and the score tied at 15 different points. Jacksonville State rallied from a four-point deficit on set point to tie the set.

Southeastern's defense locked down the third set, holding the Gamecocks to a .056 attack percentage.

Hartley led three Southeastern players in double-digit kills, posting 15. Turk, who hit a career-best .667 in the match, recorded 11 kills. Ramee added 10 kills and a career-high 15 digs for the first double-double of her career. Mikayla Shippy handed out 46 assists. Ramee, Bunn and Brooke Balser each served up a pair of aces, and Morgan Todd added one. Todd led SLU with 16 digs and Balser added 14.

Emily Rutherford led the Gamecocks with 14 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Jennifer Hart handed out 23 assists and Samantha Bohne, who had Jacksonville State's only service ace, led all players with 20 digs.

Southeastern returns to the University Center, Tuesday, to host Southern at 6 p.m. in the 2014 home opener. All home volleyball matches this season are free to the public.
