LSU Pulls Away for 75-42 Win over SLU

Scoring droughts doom Lady Lions in third straight loss

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU finished the game on a 30-5 run to pull away for a 75-42 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Scoring droughts at the ends of each half doomed SLU (3-6) in its third straight road loss to a Southeastern Conference opponent. LSU (4-4) also outscored Southeastern, 20-2, to close the first half. The Lady Lions hit just 27.1 percent (16-for-59) of their field goal attempts and shot just 2-for-22 from three-point range.

"We went on a scoring drought in both halves." Southeastern head coach Yolanda Moore said. "Our 3-point shot wasn't falling. We kind of fell in love with it, I'm not sure why.

"We tried to get some stuff going to the basket in the second half, and we cut the lead down to 10," Moore added. "Our kids showed a lot of heart in that spurt, but we weren't able to maintain that. I can't say that I am pleased with our effort because I know they are much more capable than what they showed. We just have to get ready for the next game. We just have to find a way to make shots. That is what it boils down to."

The senior backcourt of Symone Miller and Elizabeth Styles led the Lady Lions with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Junior forward Nanna Pool led SLU with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Styles dished out a team-high four assists. Styles, senior forward Jameika Hoskins and junior guard Erica Hernandez each had two steals.

LSU was led by senior guard DaShawn Harden, who finished with a game-high 20 points and four steals. Senior forward Sheila Boykin posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while junior wing Anne Pedersen chipped in with 10 points for the Tigers. LSU sophomore wing Raignye Moncrief added eight points, nine rebounds and a game-high nine assists.

The opening 10 minutes were back-and-forth with the lead changing six times early on. With 10:50 left, a Hoskins basket cut the LSU lead to 13-12. Unfortunately for SLU, it would not make another field goal for the rest of the first half and went into halftime down, 33-14.

LSU would grow the lead to as much as 22 early in the second half. SLU would not go away quietly, however, as it held LSU scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes. A Pool jumper fell to cap a 14-2 run and cut the Tigers' advantage to 49-39 with 7:09 remaining.

However, the tables turned once again. LSU scored 20 unanswered points over the next six minutes on the way to the 33-point final margin.

Southeastern will return home on Saturday to host Florida A&M at 2 p.m. in the University Center. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, where live stats and a live video stream (LionVision subscription required) will also be accessible.

Sophomore guard Bre' Warren will be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Slidell native courtesy of PRIDE.
