STILLWATER, Okla. – The
Jay Ladner era opened with a competitive first half for Southeastern Louisiana, but Oklahoma State pulled away after halftime for an 83-55 win in the 2014-15 season opener, Friday, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys (1-0) took advantage of 21 SLU (0-1) turnovers, outscoring the Lions 29-5 off miscues.
Down by as much as nine points in the first half, the Lions narrowed the gap over the half's final minutes. A three-pointer by
Zay Jackson, and
Bret Barclay's layup, in the final minute leading up to halftime brought SLU within two points.
Trailing 35-33 at the half, the Lions could not keep pace with OSU down the stretch. The Cowboys quickly opened up a double-digit lead, in the second half, going up 48-38 on Le'Bryan Nash's dunk with 15:50 remaining.
Hammond native
Zay Jackson led the Lions with 16 points, shooting 6-of-24 from the floor.
DeVonte Upson turned in a double-double, adding 10 points and leading the team with 10 rebounds.
SLU shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60 overall) from the floor, including 6-of-28 from three-point range (21.4 percent). The Cowboys combined to shoot 28-of-63 from the floor (44.4 percent) and 41.4 percent from the beyond the arc (12-of-29).
