HAMMOND, La. – The Shick Show scored a pair of runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings Wednesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field to defeat the Backdoor Sliders in game one of Southeastern Louisiana's Heart of a Lion Fall World Series.
In each case, the Shick Show came up with key, two-out base hits to score its runs.
Webb Bobo singled to right field in the fourth, driving in
Kevin Carr and
Ryan Byers, to stake his team to a 3-1 lead. Byers, a native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, knocked a two-out double to right center to plate in
Daniel Midyett and Carson Crites in the fifth. Midyett helped extend the lead to 7-2, driving in Bobo and
Brooks Morse with a two-out single to right.
Jake Johnson (1-0), a transfer from Neosho County Community College, picked up the win. The junior right-hander allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Freshman right-hander Mac Sceroler, a native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, also fanned six batters in his two scoreless innings of relief.
Kyle Cedotal (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing a single hit in four innings pitched. He surrendered three runs, two earned, walking three and fanning a game-high seven batters.
Game two of the series is Friday. Halloween festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. with players wearing costumes during batting practice. A home run derby, in which children in costume will be allowed to shag baseballs, will follow. A family-friendly atmosphere with candy, decorations and music will provide a safe Trick-or-Treat alternative leading up to the 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
