Bearkats Top Southeastern In Southland Hoops Action

Lions turn in second-best shooting performance of season in losing effort

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team dropped an 85-78 Southland Conference decision Thursday to Sam Houston State at the University Center.

Joshua Filmore hit a three-pointer and JaMichael Hawkins hit a pair of threes inside the game's final 3:30, but it was not enough to spark a Lion comeback.

"This was going to be a high-scoring affair, which we've had with them in the past, but not everybody showed up to the party tonight," head coach Jim Yarbrough said. "They opened the door for us in the last five minutes, we got the ball at point-blank range, our front line was really disappointing."

Hawkins led all scorers with 26 points and Dre Evans chipped in 18 for Southeastern (7-9, 2-3 Southland) before fouling out. The Lions shot 55 percent from the floor (27-of-49), but were out-rebounded 31-17 in the contest.

Kaheem Ransom led five Sam Houston (12-5, 4-1 Southland) players in double digits with 22 points. Jabari Peters (17), Paul Baxter (13), Michael Holyfield (12) and James Thomas (11) all contributed double-digit points as the Bearkats shot 63 percent overall (29-of-46).

Southeastern hosts Lamar (1-16, 0-5 Southland) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday following the women's game. The Cardinals fell 78-55 Thursday at the University of New Orleans. Tickets for all home games can be purchased at www.LionSports.net or by calling the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office, located in the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics, at (985) 549-LION.
