Southeastern Wins Tangi Tourism Lion Classic

Bunn, Shippy, Todd named All-Tournament following sweep

HAMMOND, La. – With four-set victories over in-state rivals Southern and Louisiana Tech Saturday, the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team swept through a four-team field to win the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic at the University Center.

Southeastern (6-6) knocked off Southern (1-9) by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 25-11, 25-13, in Saturday's second match of the day. Earlier in the day Nebraska-Omaha defeated Stetson, 3-0, in a matchup of the two out-of-state schools in the tournament.

The Lady Lions dominated in the three sets they won, hitting .453 (first set) and .303 (second set) as a team. Rachael Bunn led the way, recording 11 kills without an error. Mikayla Shippy dished out 38 assists while Morgan Todd posted 19 digs and Brooke Balser added 12. Southeastern recorded 13.5 team blocks.

Southern was led by Phalen Clark with six kills, 22 assists and 10 digs. Diamond Williams led the Lady Jaguars with 13 digs and Simone Beasley contributed 12.

Stetson, in its final match, defeated Tech, 3-1, and Southern dropped its contest to Omaha.

In the tournament's final match, Southeastern came from behind to knock off Tech, 15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.

Tiffany Thomas, who transferred to Southeastern from Tech, led the Lady Lions with 16 kills. Bunn (11) and Parrie Hartley (10) each added double-digit kills to the comeback effort. Shippy handed out 41 assists and recorded nine digs. Todd (13 digs) and Cherish Krohn (12 digs) led the Lady Lion defensive crew down the stretch.

Three Lady Techsters, Xzache Mathis (16), Rebecca Redgen (12) and Dalane Guidry (10), tallied double-digit kills in a losing effort. Maria Coelho turned in a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs while Alexandra Aviles led all players with 23 digs.

Aviles and Redgen represented Tech on the Tangi Tourism All-Tournament Team. They were joined by Kim Bailey and Kelley Wollack of Omaha as well as Tiffany Creamer and Ellen Hawks of Stetson. Phalen Clark was the lone representative of Southern while Lady Lions Bunn, Shippy and Todd were honored.
