Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – For the second-consecutive game Saturday, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored late and the bullpen held on for a win over Tennessee-Martin.

Southeastern (2-0) scored twice in the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead on a pair of RBI-singles by Ben Hernandez and Corey Bryan.

Catcher Jameson Fisher led off the inning with a single to right field off Skyhawks' reliever John Houston (0-1) and advanced to second base on a fielding error by Byron Johann in right. Designated hitter Sam Roberson sacrificed Fisher to third before Hernandez' single. Hernandez stole second, his second swipe of the game, and scored on Bryan's two-out base knock.

The Lion offense was slow starting against UT-Martin (0-2). Southeastern stranded five runners in the first two innings while the Skyhawks plated an unearned run in the first.

In the fourth, Southeastern tied the game on a steal of home by Fisher. Hit by a pitch to open the inning, the freshman from Zachary, La., stole second and was sacrificed to third by Roberson. Timing the UT-Martin catcher's throw to the mound just right, Fisher slid in ahead of the tag.

Harry Slade jump started the offense in the fifth with a two-out single to left-center. The return throw from Skyhawk center fielder Brent Morris got away from the second baseman, allowing Slade to take an extra bag on the play. The senior from Baltimore, Md., stole third, also his second steal of the game, and scored to give the Lions a 2-1 lead on Aaron Haag's wind-blown pop-up to right.

UT-Martin grabbed the lead right back in the sixth. A hit batter, a pair of singles and a two-out throwing error allowed the Skyhawks to momentarily take a 3-2 lead.

Southeastern came right back to tie the game, again, in the sixth. Hernandez drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Bryan's two-out double into the left-field corner.

For the second consecutive game the Lion bullpen held UT-Martin scoreless and a freshman, Kyle Cedotal (1-0), picked up the win. Redshirt freshman John Gremillion picked up his first career save by retiring the side, in order, in the ninth.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday is Academy Family Day and kids will be allowed to join the Lions on the field for the National Anthem. After the game, kids will be able to get autographs from the Lions and run the bases.

Fans will also have a chance to enjoy the Raising Cane's Challenge. If the Lions score five or more runs in the game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet through the Southeastern athletics website as well as on the KSLU and TuneIn Radio apps.
