Lady Lions Drop A Pair At ISTAP Collegiate Cup

Southeastern returns home to face Grambling State Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday in the final day of competition at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup.

Southeastern dropped a three-set decision to South Dakota (3-1), 25-23, 25-23, 25-15, after falling in four sets earlier in the day to Tennessee State (2-1).

The Lady Lions (1-3) were led offensively by senior Courtney Donald. The senior recorded at least 10 kills in both matches, including 12 in the South Dakota contest. Donald hit .409 against the Coyotes and added a pair of assisted blocks for 13 points.

Senior-transfer Becky Bekelja contributed 26 assists against South Dakota while Megan McMillin (14 digs) and freshman Morgan Todd (11 digs), a Mandeville native, each contributed double-digit dig totals.

Against Tennessee State, the Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead. Behind a pair of kills from seniors Tamra Grayson and Courtney Donald, Southeastern took built a 5-2 advantage in the first set. Though Tennessee State would narrow the deficit, the Lady Lions twice pushed their lead to five points in taking the set, 25-20.

Tennessee State found their offensive stroke in the second set and carried it through the remainder of the match, taking the finals three sets, 25-17, 25-16, 25-14. Naomi Wells led the way with 22 kills while Sherryce Butler and Rachel Ambroch both contributed double-digit kills to the effort.

Donald again led the Lady Lions offensively with 10 kills and a .226 hitting percentage. She added in a pair of assisted blocks. McMillin contributed a team-high 11 digs and Bekelja set up the offense with 25 assists.

Southeastern returns to action Tuesday against Grambling State in the University Center. First serve of the home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m.
