Lions Fall Late To UTSA In Hard Fought Contest, 59-51

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Michael Hale scored 10 points, including a key steal and layup with 1:53 remaining as UTSA pulled away from a two-point lead in the final two minutes to claim a 59-51 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday at the UTSA Convocation Center.

Jeromie Hill scored a game-high 16 points while Igor Nujic added 10 as UTSA (15-9, 7-3 SLC) closed out the game on an 8-0 run after Jeremy Campbell cut the lead to 53-51 on a jumper in the lane with 2:00 remaining.

Nujic hit a pair of free throws that gave the Roadrunners a 55-51 lead before Hale deflected a pass from Todd Nelson and scored to put UTSA up, 57-51. Nujic iced the game with a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left after Nelson missed three on the Lions' previous possession.

Southeastern (8-14, 2-8 SLC) battled the Roadrunners point-for-point in the contest that saw nine ties and 10 lead changes. The Lions built a 31-30 lead at halftime as they shot 12-for-29 (41.4 percent) from the floor while holding UTSA to 9-for-22 (40.9). The Roadrunners outscored Southeastern, 29-20, in the second half and took the lead for good when Melvin Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 3:20 left.

Campbell led a balanced Southeastern attack with 10 points while Daron Populist and Roosevelt Johnson added eight apiece. Freshman Donovan Ross scored seven points off the bench for Southeastern while pulling down a team-high seven boards.

Southeastern will host in-state rival Northwestern State in a 6 p.m. contest in the University Center.
