Central Arkansas Rallies Past Lions, 64-63

Lions to close out season next week against McNeese, Nicholls State

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. – Central Arkansas' LaQuentin Miles scored 10 points, including his only points of the second-half on a go-ahead three-point play with 11.9 seconds left, as the Bears rallied from a 10-point deficit and edged Southeastern Louisiana, 64-63, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at the Farris Center.

Oliver Wells added 10 points off the bench for UCA (8-19, 3-11 SLC), which blew a 10-point lead in the second half before coming back to snap a 10-game losing streak. Southeastern, which was eliminated from contention for its ninth straight berth in the Southland Conference Tournament, fell to 10-17 overall and 3-11 in the Southland Conference.

Southeastern led 63-58 when Daron Populist drained a jumper from the left corner with 1:05 remaining before a 3-pointer by UCA's Jarvis Garner cut the lead to 63-61 with 25.7 seconds left.

After a timeout and UCA foul, Southeastern's DeShawn Patterson missed a pair of free throws setting up the Bears for a chance to send the game to overtime. Miles, UCA's leading scorer who came off the bench, drove the lane and was fouled by Patterson that tied the game.

Miles, who finished 4-for-11 from the floor and entered the game as a 55 percent free throw shooter, sank the go-ahead free throw and Southeastern's chance for the game-winner at the buzzer fell off the rim as Antonnio Benton missed on a short jumper in the lane.

Benton posted career-highs with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southeastern while Populist added 12. Roosevelt Johnson added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Lions before fouling out with 7:42 remaining.

Southeastern finished 23-for-57 (40.4 percent) from the floor and dominated the boards with a 51-30 advantage. The Lions finished 15-for-28 (53.6 percent) from the free throw line, including 6-for-14 in the second half.

Southeastern will wrap up the regular-season beginning on Wednesday when it plays host to McNeese State in the home finale at 7 p.m. The Lions will honor seniors Patterson and Elgin Bailey prior to the game. The Lions will conclude the regular-season next Saturday when it travels to face Nicholls State in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Stopher Gym.
