Lady Lions Sweep Texas Southern

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team defeated Texas Southern in straight sets Tuesday, 25-9, 25-17, 25-11.

Senior Courtney Donald led the Lady Lions with 11 kills as Southeastern (11-17) recorded its best attack percentage (.393) of the season.

Texas Southern (14-13), which scored once off its own serve in the first set, could not stop the Lady Lions. Southeastern posted 14 kills without an error in the first and 15 kills with just two errors in the second. In the final set, Southeastern held the Lady Tigers to a negative attack percentage.

Mona Reed (nine kills) and Jyra Churchill (18 assists, eight digs) led Texas Southern.  

Southeastern had several standout performances. Veronica Turk (eight kills, .350), Becky Bekelja (six kills, .625) and Jessica Rauch (five kills, .500) added to Donald's offensive performance while Bekelja also dished out 33 assists.

Megan McMillin recorded 20 digs, topping 20 for the seventh time this season, and Cherish Krohn added 11 digs for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions face Nicholls State at 2 p.m. Saturday in a Senior Day, Southland Conference matchup. Tied for seventh place in the conference standings, the winner will get the seventh seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament scheduled for Nov. 16-18 in Conway, Ark.

Northwestern State swept Sam Houston State Tuesday to jumble the top of the standings. Sam Houston and Central Arkansas are tied for first with Northwestern a game back.

Sam Houston hosts McNeese (Thurs.) and Lamar (Sat.). Central Arkansas hosts Northwestern State (Thurs.) and Stephen F. Austin (Sat.). Northwestern State travels to Central Arkansas (Thurs.) and Oral Roberts (Sat.).
