Having already played 2012 NCAA Championship participants Wisconsin and Marquette, Southeastern (0-2) plays its third consecutive team that reached the post-season in NMSU (0-1), the defending Western Athletic Conference Tournament champion.
Southeastern dropped a hard-fought 64-53 decision at Marquette on Tuesday as the Lions were outscored 12-3 in the final 6:05. Plaquemine's
Jeffery Ricard scored a team-high 11 points for Southeastern while
Brandon Fortenberry added nine points and
Dre Evans eight.
Jan Petrovcic grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lions while Evans dished out a season-high five assists.
Evans, one of five newcomers on the team, leads Southeastern in scoring at 10.5 points per game followed by Ricard (7.0),
Roosevelt Johnson (6.5) and
Todd Nelson (6.5). Fortenberry, who played 35 minutes against Marquette, is averaging 5.5 points per game and looks to regain his shooting stroke after going 5-for-21 (23.8 percent) from the floor and 1-for-7 in the first two games.
NMSU dropped its season opener on Sunday at Oregon State, 71-62. Tyrone Watson and Daniel Mullings scored 14 points each to lead the Aggies while Bandja Sy added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
