Butler, Reed Power Mavericks Past Southeastern, 85-46

Johnson scores 16 for Southeastern; Lions visit SFA on Saturday

ARLINGTON, Texas – Kevin Butler and LaMarcus Reed scored 16 points each to lead a balanced UT Arlington attack and the Mavs used a 13-0 run in the first half to pull away and defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 85-46, in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Wednesday at Texas Hall.

Bo Ingram, Jordan Reves and Cameron Catlett scored eight points each as UTA (8-5, 1-0 Southland) improved to 20-4 all time against Southeastern (5-7, 0-1 Southland) and 12-0 at Texas Hall. The Mavs erased an 18-17 deficit in the first half as they built a 40-26 lead at halftime before outscoring the Lions, 45-20, in the final 20 minutes.

Butler, a TCU transfer who finished 6-for-10 from the floor, gave UTA a 20-18 lead after converting on a three-point play with 7:45 remaining in the first half. Brandon Edwards followed with another three-point play for UTA before Stuart Lagerson and Ingram connected on buckets and Reed drained a pair of free throws for a 30-18 lead.

The Mavs opened the second half with a 10-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by Reed, who finished 4-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-5 from behind the 3-point arc.

Roosevelt Johnson led Southeastern with 16 points with Jan Petrovcic adding 10. The Lions, playing the fourth game of a five-game roadtrip, finished 20-for-55 (36.4 percent) from the floor and 1-for-16 from behind the 3-point line.

Southeastern will return to action on Saturday when it visits Stephen F. Austin in a 6 p.m. contest at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
