Southeastern Opens Southland Conference Play At UT Arlington

Lions to play final game on "the Stage" looking for first-ever victory.

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team opens Southland Conference action on Wednesday when it visits UT Arlington in a 7 p.m. contest at Texas Hall.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (5-6), which will play its fourth straight on the road, looks to snap a three-game losing streak that has included setbacks at Arkansas, South Carolina and Texas Tech. The Lions, who will conclude their five-game road trip in Saturday at Stephen F. Austin, enter their 15th season in the Southland Conference and are 9-5 in league openers.

Playing without Brandon Fortenberry, who averaged 17.6 points in the first seven games, Southeastern is led in scoring by Roosevelt Johnson (9.7 ppg.), Elgin Bailey (9.5) and Daron Populist (8.2).

DeShawn Patterson (6.9), Jeremy Campbell (4.3), Antonnio Benton (4.1) and Todd Nelson (4.0) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 61.1 points per game. Bailey leads the Lions with 9.0 rebounds per game with Johnson (7.4) and Jan Petrovcic (5.2) following.

The Lions face a UTA (7-5) squad that had dominated the series with a 19-4 record and 11-0 mark at Texas Hall. The Mavericks won last year's meeting in Hammond in a 68-66 overtime decision and defeated the Lions, 85-73, two years ago in Arlington.

LaMarcus Reed leads a UTA squad in scoring at 14.0 points per game with Bo Ingram (12.6) and Kevin Butler (10.3) next. Jordan Reves leads the Mavs with 6.8 rebounds per game.

UTA has won its last three games, including an 83-56 win at Texas-Pan American last Thursday. The Mavs opened their current win streak with a 74-73 victory over Kent State on Dec. 21 before defeating St. Peter's, 73-68, on Dec. 22.

UTA enters the game averaging 77.2 points per game, second in the Southland Conference, while allowing 68.8.
