Late Rally Fuels Demons Past Southeastern, 55-38

Second half rally falls short as Lions lost first to Demons since 2008

Box Score

NATCHITOCHES – William Mosley posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while adding six blocked shots, and Northwestern State closed out with a 19-2 run over the final 9:16 to defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 55-38, in a Southland Conference game Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum.

Shamir Davis added nine points with Patrick Robinson and Gary Roberson adding seven each as Northwestern State (12-9, 5-2 SLC) snapped a seven-game regular-season losing streak to Southeastern (8-11, 2-5 SLC) dating back to the 2007-08 season.

Southeastern, which trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and 31-22 at the break, forged a 36-36 tie when Antonnio Benton scored on a layup with 12:19 remaining. Mosley countered with a basket for the Demons and Roberson followed with a 3-pointer – one of two by Northwestern State in 14 attempts with 11:34 left for a 41-36 lead.

After a basket by James Hulbin gave the Demons a 43-36 lead, Southeastern got as close as 43-38 on a basket by Elgin Bailey at the 9:16 mark, but that would be as close as the Lions would get as Northwestern State closed out the game on a 12-0 run.

Southeastern finished a season-low 27.6 percent (16-for-58) from the floor, including 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) in the second half. Defensively, Southeastern held the Demons to 21-for-58 (36.2 percent) from the floor and 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

Bailey led Southeastern in scoring with 12 points while Jan Petrovcic grabbed 11 rebounds – eight on the offensive end – as the Lions tied Northwestern State on the boards, 44-44.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Lamar in a 7 p.m. contest at the University Center. The Lions will also host Sam Houston State on Feb. 4 in a 6 p.m. contest. Tickets can be purchased from the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or on-line at www.LionSports.net.
