Lady Lions Battle But Fall To UCA In Southland Volleyball

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana's Paige Dollison recorded a team-high 10 kills and added six digs, but a hard-fought effort by the Lady Lions fell short in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 Southland Conference loss to Central Arkansas on Friday at the University Center.

Jessica Nagy posted a match-high 12 kills and added 10 digs while Taylor Hammonds and Kyle Hartman had 10 kills each for UCA (8-8, 4-1 Southland). The Sugar Bears, who claimed the 2010 Southland Conference regular-season title, opened with a .136 hitting percentage in the opening set before hitting .267 in the second and .395 in the third.

Southeastern (4-17, 0-4 Southland) took advantage of poor UCA hitting in the opening set as it built a 6-1 lead. The Sugar Bears, who had 10 of 13 attack errors in the opening set, settled down and chipped away at the lead, eventually taking a 23-22 lead on a Southeastern setting error.

UCA took control of the second set after a kill by Lauren Dear gave the Sugar Bears a 4-3 lead. Southeastern got as close as 11-9 on a service ace by Chelsea Barr, but UCA went on an 8-2 run that was capped by a block assist by Hammonds and Dear for a 19-11 lead.

The Sugar Bears used an 8-1 run midway through the third set that turned a 13-10 contest into a 21-11 advantage. Nagy had three kills and a service ace in the decisive run in helping UCA finish with a .260 hitting percentage for the match.

Dear led UCA with 40 assists with Cristin Curl adding a team-high 20 digs.

Dollison posted a .214 hitting percentage for Southeastern, which finished at .148 for the match. Courtney Donald added seven kills and three blocks for the Lady Lions while Megan McMillin added 20 digs.

Southeastern's Lindsey Young recorded 30 assists in becoming the 11th player in school history to record 1,000 assists in a career. The sophomore increased her career total to 1,004, one shy of Dee Dee Thibodeaux (1984-86) for 10th place in school history.
