Southeastern Drops Pair At Mississippi State Maroon Classic

Lady Lions face Jackson State on Tuesday in home opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Courtney Donald and Stephanie Mueller had five kills each to lead the Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team, but the Lady Lions could not overcome a slow start in the first two sets and fell to Mississippi State, 25-10, 25-9, 26-24, in the final match of the Mississippi State Maroon Classic on Saturday at Newell-Grissom Building.

Southeastern (0-3) opened the day against Southern Illinois, falling to the Salukis, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16. The Lady Lions open their 2011 home schedule on Tuesday when it faces Jackson State (1-2) in a 7 p.m. match in the University Center.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 3, SOUTHEASTERN 0
Caitlin Rance led Mississippi State (1-2) with 14 kills and 18 digs as Mississippi State hit .273 for the match. Parris Perret posted a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs in helping the Bulldogs improve to 7-1 all-time against Southeastern.

Lainey Wyman added nine kills and eight digs for MSU while Chanelle Baker added seven kills.

Mueller came off the bench for Southeastern and hit .625 in eight attempts. Lindsey Young paced the Lady Lions with 11 digs while Taylor Buckner added 10. Kinsey Williams, who earned All-Tournament honors, added four kills for Southeastern.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 3, SOUTHEASTERN 0
Alysia Mayes led SIU (2-0), which later fell to eventual champion UT Martin, with 11 kills with Jessica Whitehead and Laura Thole adding six each.

The Salukis trailed 10-3 in the second set after an ace by Buckner before rallying to take a 2-0 lead over the Lady Lions.

Donald led Southeastern with 11 kills while hitting .429 at the net. Williams added seven kills for the Lady Lions while Chelsea Barr recorded a team-high nine digs with Arianne Cruckshank adding seven.

Buckner led Southeastern with three service aces in the contest.
