LORMAN, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana junior Katie Matthews broke a 1-1 tie with a RBI triple in the top of the seventh to lead the Lady Lions to a 2-1 victory over Alcorn State Tuesday afternoon at the ASU Softball Fields.

Senior Katie Duhe was 3-for-3 at the plate and scored both runs for Southeastern, which improved to 9-13 overall with the win. Alcorn State fell to 7-10 overall on the year.

Matthews and junior Lauren Coniglio each drove in runs for the Lady Lions. In the circle, Lady Lion freshman Jessie Browne (4-4) held ASU to one hit, striking out 10 in 6.1 innings of work to earn the victory. Sophomore Elise Kittrell retired the last two batters to earn her first save of the year.

Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois was encouraged with his team's complete team effort in the victory.

“We won today because everyone understood their role and did what they need to help us to win,” Langlois commented. “Lauren is a perfect example. Two times this season we've asked her to come off the bench and lay down a suicide squeeze and twice she's come through.

“We were also pleased that Jessie was able to give us some good innings and get us deep into the game,” Langlois added. “Elise did a nice job coming in and closing the door.”

Browne and Alcorn State pitcher Deanna Rancilio matched zeroes until the Lady Lions took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Duhe led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second when Bianca Armstrong dropped the throw to first. After Matthews bunted her over to third, Duhe came home when Coniglio placed a perfect bunt in front of home plate.

Browne held the Lady Braves hitless until Jasmine Hall led off the top of the sixth inning with a single. Two outs later, Lady Lion junior catcher Meghan Gomez led a Browne pitch get past her, allowing Hall to score the tying run.

Southeastern took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Duhe lined a double inside the left field line. One batter later, Matthews lifted a shot over the head of Hall in right field. The Spring, Texas native's first triple of her Lady Lion career scored Duhe and put the Lady Lions on top.

After retiring the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, Browne walked Melissa Rubio and Bianca Armstrong before being pulled for Kittrell. Kittrell forced Shawna Bruton and Jasmine Hubbard to fly out to close out the win.

Southeastern will be back in action on Wednesday, facing Southern at 3 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
