Lions Conclude Homestand Facing NAIA Toppers

Southeastern looks to win third straight before facing WKU on Saturday

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team wraps up a three-game homestand on Monday when it faces NAIA opponent Blue Mountain College at the University Center.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the internet only at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (2-1) withstood a second-half rally to defeat in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe, 63-60, behind a second-high 23 points from Brandon Fortenberry and 20 from Roosevelt Johnson. The Lions led by as many as 14 points in the second half before ULM chipped away at the lead.

Daron Populist sank two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to help seal the victory for Southeastern, its sixth consecutive over its former Southland Conference rival and first over the Warhawks since the 2005-06 season.

Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 21.0 points per game with Johnson averaging 14.7 and a team-high 7.3 rebounds. Populist, an LSU transfer who scored a career-high 13 points for the Lions, is third in scoring at 8.3 points followed by DeShawn Patterson (6.3), Jeremy Campbell (2.7) and Michael Harrel (2.3).

Blue Mountain (4-2), based in Blue Mountain, Miss., is a member of the TransSouth Athletic Conference. The Toppers, which will play the game with Southeastern as an exhibition, opened the season with a 67-3 loss at Belhaven before winning their next four games.

Devante Pulliam leads BMC in scoring (17.1) and rebounds (8.6) followed by Shane Butler (11.5) and Jarvis Fisher (11.3).

After facing Blue Mountain, Southeastern will take off for the Thanksgiving holiday before resuming play on Saturday at Sun Belt Conference power Western Kentucky.
