Southeastern Hosts Former Southland Rival ULM In Hoops Action

Lions face Warhawks for first time since 2005-06 season

HAMMOND – Coming off an impressive win its home opener on Tuesday, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team continues its three-game homestand on Saturday when it plays host to former Southland Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe at the University Center.

Tipoff is at 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (1-1) opened its 15-game home schedule last week with a 71-44 victory over Spring Hill College behind 22 points from Roosevelt Johnson and 21 from Brandon Fortenberry. The Lions shot 50 percent (26-for-52) from the floor for the contest and held Spring Hill to 14-for-49 (28.6 percent) from the field.

Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 20.0 points per game with Johnson averaging 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. DeShawn Patterson (9.5 ppg.) is next in scoring for the Lions, who are averaging 61.5 points in their first two games while allowing 55.5. LSU transfer Daron Populist is next in scoring at 6.0 per game with Jan Petrovcic pulling down 6.5 rebounds per contest.

ULM (0-3), which played in the Southland Conference for 24 seasons before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2006-07, opened the season on Nov. 11 with a loss at Ole Miss before falling to Indiana State and Tennessee.

The Warhawks forged a 33-33 tie at intermission against Tennessee before the Vols pulled away in the second half, outscoring ULM, 52-29. Fred Brown led ULM with 18 points while Hugh Mingo came off the bench to add 11.

Brown averages 13.3 points to lead the Warhawks in scoring with Charles Winborne (8.0), Trent Mackey (6.3), Mingo (6.3) and Fabio Riberio (6.3) next. Riberio leads ULM with 5.7 rebounds per game.

The game marks the first meeting between the schools since Southeastern claimed a 42-40 decision on Feb. 16, 2006 in the University Center. ULM leads the all-time series, 60-29, with Southeastern claiming the last five meetings.
