HAMMOND – An early second-set lead did not hold up for Southeastern as Stephen F. Austin came storming back to win the set and sweep the match, 16-25, 22-25, 25-27, in a Southland Conference volleyball match Saturday at the University Center.
Mary Caitlin Bottles (13 kills) and Jill Ivy (12 kills) led the way for Stephen F. Austin (10-11, 3-4 Southland), which hit .277 for the match. Paige Holland entered the match averaging 9.62 assists per set, good for second in the conference, and finished with 35 in the match.
Southeastern (4-19, 0-6 Southland) was led by
Courtney Donald and
Elizabeth Ramee who finished with eight kills apiece.
Lindsey Young provided 31 assists and
Megan McMillin recorded 10 digs.
The Lady Lions took an 8-7 lead in the first set on a service ace by
Arianne Cruckshank. A kill by Leslie Jackson on the next serve tied up the set for Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks would take the lead, 9-8, on a Lady Lion attack error off a Katzy Randall serve and maintain control throughout the remainder of the set.
Southeastern built a 15-9 lead in the second set off one of Donald's eight kills, but Stephen F. Austin would rattle off eight points in a row to take a 17-15 lead. The Lady Jacks would hold off Southeastern the rest of the set with a pair of kills each from Bottles and Ivy.
With 15 tie scores in the third set, a 23-21 Southeastern lead was not enough to stave off Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks would come back tie the score before a service error by Melissa Miksch would hand a point and the ball back to Southeastern to serve set point.
Southeastern was called for serving out of order and the score was tied once again. Stephen F. Austin would hold off the Lady Lions for the win and the 3-0 victory.
The Lady Lions face Texas-San Antonio at 7 p.m. Thursday in San Antonio, Texas, as Southeastern begins a four-match road trip.
