CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team held off a late rally by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to earn a split in Southland Conference doubleheader action at Chapman Field.

Southeastern ran its record to 19-29 overall and 7-19 in Southland Conference play. The Lady Islanders are now 21-30 overall and 10-15 in league action.

In the nightcap, sophomore Katie Duhe homered and drove in two runs to lead the Lady Lions to a 6-4 victory. Southeastern junior Catherine Gunther (9-13) survived a four-run fifth inning, battling out of trouble in the sixth inning to earn the complete-game victory.

In the opener, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took advantage of four Lady Lion errors in a 3-0 victory. Southeastern junior Chelsea Takacs had two of the Lady Lions' four hits off Lady Islander starter Addie Tallman (18-15).

The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m.

Game One – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3, Southeastern Louisiana 0
The Lady Islanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Southeastern freshman starter Katelyn Thomason (6-9). Stephanie Estrada reached on an error by Southeastern second baseman Amber Freeman and scored on a wild pitch to put TAMUCC ahead.

Southeastern mounted a threat in the top of the third inning, as sophomore Tamra Ladnier and freshman Meghan Gomez reached on errors to put runners at first and second with two outs. Tallman, who pitched all 14 innings of Saturday's doubleheader, kept the Lady Lions off the board by forcing senior Heather Sherrill to fly out to end the frame.

A&M-Corpus Christi padded its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Errors by Ladnier and Duhe allowed the Lady Islanders to take a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cassie Redman reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning. Two outs later, Estrada doubled home Redman to push the Lady Islander edge to 3-0.

That was more than enough for Tallman, who did not allow a Southeastern base runner to move into scoring position in the final three innings to finish the complete-game, four-hit shutout.

Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 6, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4
Southeastern wasted no time scratching out its first run off the day off Tallman in the nightcap. Duhe roped a one-out home run to put Southeastern on the board. Her fourth home run of the season put the Lady Lions up, 1-0.

Tallman and Gunther were mired in a pitcher's duel until both offenses got going in the fifth inning. The wild frame saw the two teams combine for nine runs.

In the top of the fifth, Tallman issued a walk to Freeman, then allowed consecutive singles to Ladnier and freshman Jordan Logan to load the bases with one out. Duhe drew a bases loaded walk to force in the inning's first run.

Gomez followed with a bases loaded single to plate Ladnier and keep the bases loaded with one out. Sophomore Kelly Lyman hit a comebacker to Tallman, who threw home to force Logan. However, catcher Alaina Byars tried to complete the double play at first, but her throw was off line enough to allow Duhe, Gomez and Lyman to all score to give Southeastern a 6-0 lead.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases to open the inning. Lauren Sanders, Larissa Martin, Estrada and Byars followed with four consecutive RBI singles to cut the lead to two. Gunther recovered to get out of the inning with the 6-4 advantage still intact.

Corpus Christ mounted one last threat in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. Gunther escaped the frame unscathed, forcing Byars to pop out to Freeman to end the inning. In the seventh, Gunther sat the side down in order to secure the victory.
